techniques, carried out three road crossings using the dynamic ramming method with their
GRUNDORAM Aopllo providing an impact energy 40 500 Nm.
Contrary to the open trench steel pipes, which are surrounded by PE (Ø 1420 x 22.7 mm),
glass-fibre coated steel pipes were applied for the road crossings. Three pipe strings each
with a length of 18 m were welded together, an initial pressure test was carried out and the
pipe ramming process was started. All three installations were carried out in three successive
working days, as the working sequence was co-ordinated in an exemplary manner and despite
the multilingual team-work (Italian, German and Dutch) carried out in a routine manner.
Key facts:
)
Technique: dynamic steel pipe ramming.
)
Type of bore: road crossing for NEL pipeline Greifswald to Bremen/Germany.
)
Equipment:GRUNDORAM Apollo.
)
New pipes: protection pipe ND 355 mm, gas pipe ND 225 mm.
)
Installation lengths: 34 m in Perdöhl, 40 m in Albertinenhof, 44 m in Schwartow.
)
Soil type: compact, sandy soil.
)
Ramming speed: 40 m/2.5 hr.
)
Clients: WINGAS, E.O.N. Ruhrgas, GASUNIE.
)
Main contractor: Bonatti S.p.A. Parma/Italy (for two 60 km sections).
)
Subcontractor: DALCAI Horizontale Wegboringen B.V.
In addition to installing steel pipes, ramming machines can be applied for the so-called
HDD-assist techniques, which help to avoid costly situations when problems arise on a HDD
project. These techniques have been used to successfully remove stuck drill stems, assist
directional drill rigs during difficult pullbacks, free immobilised product pipes and even salvage
failed bores by removing stuck pipe from the ground.
HDD assist and rescue techniques include:
)
Conductor barrel: installation of casing pipes for HDD crossings.
)
Pull back assist: overcoming hydrolock.
)
Drill rod recovery: loosening of jammed HDD drill rod.
)
Bore salvage: rescuing/removing jammed product pipes.
Static pipe bursting in pipeline rehabilitation
Leaking oil, gas or water pressure pipelines force utility companies to decide whether to repair,
renovate or replace the defective pipes. The main decisive factors are the degree and type of
damage, the sustainability of the method and the resulting rehabilitation cost. The choice of
sustainable trenchless pipe rehabilitation techniques ranges from punctual repair over partial
renovation to complete renewal of the defective pipeline.
Static pipe bursting is an approved method for trenchless pipe replacement. The old
pipe (from ND 50 on) is destroyed underground and the new pipe, often of larger diameter,
is pulled in simultaneously. Defective supply pipes having major damages, e.g. breakage,
incrustation, root infestation, misalignment, split sockets, tears, leakages, mechanical wear
and tear, can be replaced. New pipes of almost any material (plastic or metal) up to ND 1000
can be installed. Daily capacities of 150 - 300 m are possible. Applying the static pipe bursting
method overcomes the necessity to patch repair or renovate the old pipe and a new pipeline
with a service life of the up to 100 years in is installed perfect static conditions. In addition to
the static pipe bursting method, the versatile GRUNDOBURST rigs can also be applied for the
close-fit relining of pipes according to the TIP or pipe reduction method.
Speedy replacement of a cast iron gas main with new PE pipes in a
pedestrian zone
The task was to renew a 100 mm (4 in.) cast iron gas main. Approximately 1500 m (4930 ft) of
pipe in need of replacement (initial installation period between 1930 and 1960). The gas mains
were showing signs of leakage and needed to be replaced as soon as possible. The crew were
challenged with a section of approximately 60 m (197 ft) of this project.
